An Extra Slice: Crazy Delicious Food and Protesting
Elainea Emmott talks food, protest and cooking for Heston
Governments around the world are clamping down on their people's ability to protest. At the same time, police forces are given access to new public order laws that are spun to protect the people but are too often used for repression.
On the sidelines of a Spanish, in particular Andalusian, olive oil-tasting masterclass (more on this event later), I met with Elainea Emmott, a powerful free speech advocate. We chatted for a while about the intersections of food and protest, free speech and feeding. Click on the link below to listen to our impromptu interview.
Elainea is a photographer and has documented events including Black Lives Matter, UK Black Pride Women for Refugee Women, and Million Women Rise. Her activism is vital, and she photographs people highlighting disabilities and promoting the older 50. Recent award-winning photo-documentary work has included the impact of knife crime in London.
She also profoundly understands how cultural issues impact our food and food systems. But she also loves cooking for people and runs supper clubs, and has appeared in the 'Let There Be Brunch' episode of Heston Blumenthal's hit TV show, Crazy Delicious, available on Netflix and in the UK, Channel 4.
